The Beat Down

The beat down starts within myself.

It’s strange, how what I thought was health

was only ego polished up-

Convinced that I had found true wealth.

And full of it and seeping out,

The only outcome left I vowed

Was beating down the great façade;

I called the inner poser out.

Two faces, but just one still stands.

Busted knuckles, broken hands,

are evidence of my beat down.

Very few would understand.

Are you still defining your identity by the sum of your possessions? How about your achievements? Are you still desperately holding on to the scraps of your existence in order to save face? How about to feel secure…to maintain some level of control of your life?

Guys, the glass tower you have built is coming down, and there isn’t a thing you can do about it. Let it fall. See yourself as the pile of scrap that you are; see your “stuff” as nothing more than relics of an obsolete system. What is that system? It is False Self, it is the old man.

It is time for a beat down…yours. It is high time to put the poser in its place, to remove the mask of Christian performance, the pretense of piety, and the trophies of yuppie achievement. John 3:30 says, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Still not convinced this is the path? How about John 12:24-25, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal.” We must lose our life in order to find the LIFE that was designed, crafted, scheduled and planned for each one of us.

  • The Lord is Salvation

From a comrade who may understand a portion of your latest post. The poem is outstanding. Keep sharing that depth. Please. Such a deep need. And SO MANY MEN !
So many MIA’s, POW’s, AWOL’s, casualties, trainees and untrained soldiers.

Clear declaration of what I am NOT. Do these guys know that by coming to Fight Club, they might actually hear, CLEARLY, who they ARE, from the One who knows ?

Finally, when that second face, the inner poser, the egotistical, self reliant, self promoting, unforgiving, judgemental, lustful, ever hungry, UNRELENTING “old man” rears his ugly head again….I pound him flat with the joy of the Lord, yes?
